Bricks Straight From Sofia

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Bulgarian LUGger Georgi Varzonovtsev has always had a thing for modular buildings with a classic twist. This latest MOC of his however adds so much more to the frame.

It turns out after all that I'm not the only one who fancies buildings in classic yellow!

As seen on 'Oborishte street' - just a bit more vivid.

Using a real-life building in downtown Sofia as a source of inspiration, Georgi has conjured up a remarkable feast of yellow goodness. Knowing how he goes about building his MOCs, I can’t wait for the interior shots – and a glimpse of this beauty in real life (the MOC, not the original building… I like the LEGO version better ;) )!

Hotel Sterling

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Stacy Sterling, the better half of fellow blogger Dave, built this lovely modular hotel for the Sterling’s ToT-LUG layout. The hotel, modeled after Hotel Maya in Long Beach, CA, features an intricate web of cleverly SNOT-ed windows and a spacious reception area on the ground floor. But the real eye-catcher of this building is the angled construction of the hotel rooms.

Welcome to Hotel Sterling, ... such a lovely place...

And if you’re attending Brickworld 2010, Stacy and Dave promise that you can check out this building in real life.

Dem Deutschen Volke

Brickshelf user sheep must probably live in the “multi-kulti” hub of European cultures, Berlin. Otherwise I just can’t see how he knows local landmarks such as the Brandenburger Tor or the Siegessäule in such fine detail.

Das Reichstag

Der Reichstag... and Norman Foster's addition to it.

And with his latest creation, this builder has provided some stiff competition for Eurobricks microscale master Legostein and his equally awesome mini Reichstag:

Transparent Politics - an oxymoron, perhaps?

Transparent Politics... An oxymoron, perhaps?

I guess these two just go to show that the smaller the scale, the greater the expertise required to pull it off. Mini-hats off!

This MOC features an incredible rounded effect and expertly fits a roof and doors into the structure. The cool aesthetic of white and blue give the building a nice modern pallette to compliment the sleek design. Check out the full gallery here.

Wheelbarrow Willie

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

Sometimes I just don’t know what to expect as I browse Brickshelf. This is one of those times.

The Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation (NSLC), sole distributor of alcohol products in Nova Scotia, Canada, sponsored a promotion designed to educate people in the various ways of getting home when they’ve been drinking too much. One of these ways included a character named Wheelbarrow Willie, an enterprising young man who would gladly wheel you home from the bar for a fee, much like a taxi service, but with fresher air.

All of that said, LEGO builder and Brickshelf member pooka was clearly a fan of this commercial, as shown by his gallery which includes a Classic Town styled bar with unique signage and surrounding scenery depicting this unusual promotion.

It’s been one of these days.

Something not very common among town buildings is the Lego casino.  Luclego creates this very cleverly styled Casino with a modern design:

Happy Lunar New Year, “live” in Beijing

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

Happy Chinese New Year to all Classic Town readers. TheBrickster and I are right here in Beijing, China where the live excitement can be felt upon welcoming the Year of the Ox. Lots of fireworks and firecrackers can be seen in the buzzing streets. Classic-Town.net staff wishes our readers a safe and bountiful new year.

I have a sudden thought. Do you know that the 2008 Summer Olympic games are held in August last year? It was a significant grand event, which marks one global sporting event that brings the world together to view the sporting events. One of the most significant grand masterpieces is the Beijing National Stadium, nicknamed the Bird Nest. It was constructed by a consortium group of companies reside in Hong Kong, known as HKLUG. The stadium features a lattice-like steel outer skeleton around the concrete stadium bowl and has a seating capacity of over 90,000 people.

The Beijing National Stadium was the site of the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as the athletics events and soccer finals. TheBrickster, shall we join in the fun. There is a big party bash over there.

Contemporary House Design

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

While many Lego Town and City fans try to create buildings with classic and old-world architecture, only a few have tried building contemporary designs.  Lego builder Mdee has created a very modern “Glass House” as a luxury residence.  The contemporary and smooth design works well for a creation of this variety.
